Black Peak: South Face and Last Chance Pass

Black Peak, located at Rainy Pass in the North Cascades, offers an exhilarating ski adventure with stunning views. The recommended route is the Black Peak - Last Chance Pass Tour, which begins at Rainy Pass and follows a gentle ascent through larch glades to Wing Lake and then up to the col beneath Black Peak. The skinning is moderate, and the climb to the summit requires a short booting section. The views from the top are breathtaking, showcasing the North Cascadian peaks, with Mt. Goode's NE Buttress stealing the show. The descent offers 2700 ft of south-facing corn skiing, with alternative gullies providing a preferable route. The tour covers approximately 15 miles and involves 8000 ft of elevation gain, making it a long but rewarding journey. It is best to undertake this tour shortly after the opening of Highway 20 for optimal snow conditions. Additionally, there is an optional bonus run called "The Buttcrack," which adds a humorous touch to the adventure. Technical skills required are relatively low, and the tour offers an excellent combination of scenery, skiing, and memorable experiences in the North Cascades.
