Crystal Mountain

Crystal Mountain is just a two-hour drive from Seattle and provides countless opportunities for backcountry adventures, whether you’re using the lifts or earning your turns. When the snow at Snoqualmie gets heavy and damp, the higher elevation and colder temperatures at Crystal can make the extra drive worth considering. On clear days, the breathtaking views of Mount Rainier are hard to beat.

Sheep Lake Couloir, nestled in the Crystal Backcountry, offers an aesthetic ski line through Chinook Peak. The journey begins with a trip up through Silver Basin to the col east of Threeway Peak, leading to a scenic traverse to the base of the couloir. Skiers can either boot up to the left of the couloir as recommended by the guidebook, or take a more scenic, albeit longer, route around the backside of Chinook Peak, exposing them to stunning views of the Southern Cascades. Despite an initial steep drop from the top of the couloir, the run thereafter is more relaxed. Remarkably, the area manages to maintain a tranquil ambiance despite its popularity, blending adventure with serenity for those exploring its slopes.
