Tiny towns and treasures like Burgdorf Hot Springs make this a bucket list ride for sure. Oregon BDR
The Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route (ORBDR) is the 12th route developed by the BDR organization for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. The Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route (ORBDR) is a 682-mile, multi-day off-pavement ride designed for adventure and dual-sport motorcycles. Starting at the terminus of the CABDR-N at the California border and exploring north through ancient pine forests and into the rugged mountains of the Cascade Range, challenges include lava rocks, silt, sand, and arduous mountain roads. From sagebrush steppe and hot springs, to caverns and glaciated volcanoes, riders are guided into remote territories that reveal many of the state’s natural wonders, providing prime sightseeing and recreational opportunities. With stunning views throughout and terrain that is certain to test your riding skills and endurance, the ORBDR is one of the best ways to discover the backcountry of Oregon. Please note: Since the Oregon BDR was released, we’ve listened closely to rider feedback and learned from real-world experience on the route. In November 2025 , we’re excited to introduce major updates to the first three sections of the ORBDR to improve rideability and extend the riding season. The original southern sections often faced closures due to wildfire restrictions and extreme summer heat in the high desert, making it difficult to complete the route from start to finish. The revised Sections 1–3 now travel through higher-elevation National Forests, offering cooler temperatures, more consistent conditions, and a longer, safer season to ride the full route—from mid-June through mid-October. You can purchase the map with the addendum HERE , or, if you already own the 2nd Edition map, you can purchase the addendum separately HERE . Read more about the permanent update HERE . Utah BDR

Beginning near Mexican Hat, UT and ending in Garden City, UT the route includes iconic places including Valley of the Gods, Moab, the Abajo and La Sal mountains, Onion Creek, 9 Mile Canyon and the Wasatch Mountains. Extremely hot conditions and the monsoon season occur in July and August making it a difficult time of year to ride the UTBDR. View on BDR Website

Washington BDR
It’s been 15 years since we launched the Washington BDR, our first route. Since then, we’ve been saving up route changes, big and small, for a future update. That time is now! Because of the route changes, we are releasing new GPX tracks, a new printed map (coming in January 2026), and a new short film of the founders riding the WABDR in its new configuration. The Washington Backcountry Discovery Route is a multi-day off-pavement ride designed for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles. This route begins at the border with Oregon on the Columbia River and quickly ascends into Washington’s densely forested South Cascade Range, passing by 12,276’ Mt. Adams on the way northward. The central portion of the route explores the more arid eastern foothills of the Cascades and crosses multiple sub-ranges with optional, more difficult rocky and rutted roads. After crossing the Entiat and Chelan Mountains, the route descends and wraps around Lake Chelan to enter the North Cascades. This remote northern region offers wonderful scenery and undulating backroads before ending at a remote US-Canada border crossing near the ghost town of Nighthawk. It takes around 4-6 days on average to ride this 688-mile route with countless photo opportunities along the way to slow you down. The best time of year to ride it is July-Sept when it’s typically snow free at the highest elevations. Despite being one of the shorter BDRs, the WABDR packs in a lot of stunning viewpoints, quaint small towns, and epic riding that you won’t forget. View on BDR Website

Wyoming BDR
The long awaited Wyoming BDR (WYBDR) is our eleventh route developed for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. The Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route is a multi-day off-pavement ride for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles through the most dramatic and rugged landscapes in Wyoming. Beginning in Baggs, WY, the route traces the mountain ranges to the east through the Sierra Madre and Medicine Bow Ranges, crosses west to the Wind River Range, then goes back east and north through the Bighorn Mountains, eventually ending at a remote Wyoming-Montana border. Almost every section includes some moderately technical riding, as the remote two-track flows through regions of vast high-desert, short-grass prairies, and alpine climates. You will experience expansive views from the summit of two different 11,000-foot mountains, cross two major rim escarpments and pass through many other seldom visited areas and historic mining towns. This is the most remote BDR, so plan ahead and be prepared to have a true backcountry adventure. NOTE: Riders should not attempt the entire WYBDR before July 1st due to sensitive land areas and lingering snow and mud. Click HERE for more information. View on BDR Website

PA Wilds BDR-X
A big BDR Thank You to our good friend, Jack O’Connor, for not only masterminding the PA Wilds loop but for generously gifting it to BDR and in turn to the entire ADV community. His creation is now the second official BDR-X loop and will be vigilantly managed by the BDR team from now on. Jack holds legendary status in the Mid-Atlantic adventure riding community as the force behind the long-standing Pine Barrens 500 Adventure Ride and the Pine Barrens Adventure Camp School in southern NJ. He and his team have introduced thousands of riders to ADV riding over the last two decades. His vast knowledge of the riding opportunities on the East Coast led him to his volunteer work with the BDR organization and ultimately helping to create the first BDR route on the East Coast, the Mid-Atlantic BDR (MABDR). Jack joined the MABDR filming expedition providing local knowledge and comic relief in the film, which won him loyal fans among BDR supporters. Jack has been riding dirt bikes for over 50 years, a passion that began with the purchase of his first bike, a Honda SL70 in 1972. He went on to race Moto Cross and Enduros through the mid 70’s and early 80’s, and Rallymotos in the early 2000’s. Later he became president of a local enduro club, and in 2021 Jack was selected by the AMA to chair their recreational off-road riding commission. In 2003, Jack was introduced to the concept of GPS guided adventure rides, and made his own ‘Dakar practice loop,’ that eventually became the Pine Barrens 300/500 Adventure Ride, now in its 16th year. After seeing a rise popularity of the sport, Jack started an adventure riding school with his friend and enduro champ, Mike Bradway. Jack has led rides and organized events for BMW, KTM, Klim, REV’IT!, Rawhyde, Touratech, local dealers and other grassroots organizations. He currently runs the Pine Barrens Adventures GPS Track Subscription Service offering single and multi day self-guided adventure loops in NJ, PA, VA, and WV that are easily accessible from the Mid Atlantic area. Red Desert, Wyoming BDR-X
Whether you’re riding the entire WYBDR and looking for just a little more, or in the southern Wyoming area on the hunt for an epic – but shorter ride, the Red Desert BDR-X will not disappoint. This BDR-X shares the same starting point as the WYBDR and offers a sampling of Wyoming’s diverse terrain from the vast region known as the Red Desert. The loop is 149 miles long when starting and ending in the town of Baggs – so be sure to fuel up and grab supplies there BEFORE you set off. The route can be completed in one long day or broken-up into two. Dispersed camping is available mid-way through the route. The Red Desert has remained lesser-known as a travel destination, but offers “National Park” quality scenery and fun riding. It is one of the last high-desert ecosystems in North America, and the home to Killpecker Sand Dunes, the largest living dune system in the United States. It is also home to the world’s largest herd of desert elk, and hosts the largest migratory herd of pronghorn in the lower 48 states. Riders will enjoy varied landscape of buttes, dunes, sagebrush steppe, mountains, and rocky pinnacles. If you think about it, these are the same views and trails that hundreds of thousands of pioneers on the Oregon Trail experienced as they made their way toward Oregon, California, and Washington. Depending on your skill level and current conditions, the Red Desert BDR-X will contain modest to difficult terrain. So, we recommend riding the loop in a clockwise direction putting the most challenging sections early on in the ride – allowing you the option to turn around if the sand or technical areas become overwhelming. This way you’ll have a shorter distance to backtrack and a lower risk of running out of fuel. After riding tarmac north from Baggs for 22 miles on Hwy 789 the route turns west onto dirt roads that give a little insight into Wyoming’s vast mining and extraction industries. Continue on these roads with their intermittent deep sand, ruts and rock ledges for another 30 miles and the reward will be an area known as Adobe Town. This geological region is filled with sandstone towers, valleys, hoodoos, and more. It’s a perfect spot to stretch your legs, get your cameras out and explore this gorgeous Wyoming treasure. It’s also a good opportunity to hydrate and take a lunch break. Always remember to ride respectfully and leave no trace. Leaving Adobe Town, the route enters wide-open desert and offers a short side-trip up a rugged road that leads to the ruins of Fort LaClede, a former stage coach stop and defensive fort established in 1863. Continuing on, double-track roads lead up onto Delaney Rim another highlight of the route. The highest point, Delany Point, at over 7400 feet juts out to the north and surrounds you with outstanding views. The descent off of the rim is on hard pack roads that pass through another mining and extraction area. From there the route follows dirt county roads to connect back to Highway 789 where a right turn will lead you back to Baggs. If you are doing this loop and run low on fuel or need food and lodging, the town of Wamsutter on I-80 will be your savior. It’s accessible to the north after you descend from the Delaney Rim. Remember always Ride Right , Ride Respectfully and Yield to Animals . View on BDR Website

Steens/Alvord, Oregon BDR-X
The BDR-X Steens Mountain & Alvord Desert is a loop off of the ORBDR Section 1 designed to showcase the striking contrast of Steens Mountain and the Alvord Desert, a 5000 feet elevation difference, in remote Southeast Oregon. The total length is 250 miles and can be accomplished in two days. After the snow melts high on Steens Mountain and the roads open (around June every year) this loop can be ridden. It connects the Steens Mountain Loop Road, Moon Hill Road, Center Patrol Road in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, and the Alvord Desert. It’s hard to find a more diverse mix of surface terrain than this loop offers. Gravel roads, rocky double-track, dike roads, overgrown dirt roads, and open desert playa are all combined to make this BDR-X unique. Starting and ending in Fields, Oregon, this clockwise loop leads to Frenchglen, Diamond, The Narrows, and Alvord Hot Springs. Important Notice: There are a few important notes regarding the Steens/Alvord BDR-X Tracks: The Steens Mountain Loop Road is usually open by mid-June but sometimes opens later during heavier snow pack years. The lower roads and campgrounds often are open by the start of June. To find out the status of campgrounds and roads, call the Burns District office at 541-573-4400 and check ODOT Trip Check .
